Though this is insufficient weight for every exercise I undertake, it does offer a fair amount of resistance, and therefore aids in achieving my objective of increased cardiovascular health. With dumbbells, I simply use 12lb weights. Similarly, this is insufficient weight for some of the exercises detailed later on, but it is an appropriate weight for completing rapid repetitions, as opposed to the deliberate, slow weight lifting that comprises a portion of my strength training regimen. Bodyweight movements are ideal additions to any circuit training plan, because they do not require any additional equipment. I’ve listed the muscles worked in parentheses.

Clearly, a wide range of useful movements exists which can be blended into your circuit training workout. I will often not stop until I have completed 15 to 20 of these exercises. I like the variety it adds to the end of my workout and each exercise hits my muscles in a slightly different manner. I simply do 10 reps per exercise and just do 1 circuit. I make a conscious effort not to work the same muscles in consecutive movements.

It is certainly possible to perform circuit weight training routines that are briefer than 15-20 different movements. For example, legendary MMA fighter Randy Couture’s circuit training routine consists of bent over rows, upright rows, military presses, good mornings, lunges, squat push presses, and deadlifts. The routine is made of 8 repetitions of each movement, completed in 3-5 sets, including a minute of rest dividing each circuit.

You can add many different circuit training exercises to your routine as the combinations are endless. Build a circuit weight training routine for you by adding in some of the above mentioned exercises. Perform a high intensity set or two at the end of your regular strength training routine for a nice cardio workout that will help burn fat and preserve muscle.
